PAINTINGS IN OIL AND WATERCOLOR

On Impressionism:

"They are Impressionists in the sense that they render not the landscape but the sensation produced by the landscape" - an art critic, 1874

Artist's Statement

Painting gives me an opportunity to study my surroundings, better understand the lay of the land, and observe life. Through painting, I can share my observations with others. I love color, and the effects of light and shadow.
I enjoy painting with watercolor and with oil paints. Each has a unique quality for visual expression. They share a similar color pallet and a 2-dimensional surface and yet each has it's own characteristic quality. The rich viscosity and opaque quality of oil paints provides vibrant color, with contrasting lights and darks. Watercolors tend to provide a soft, quiet, transparent hue which for me translates into calm, tranquil imagery. I like to paint with watercolor when I'm painting on location. They are easily transportable and easy to clean. I like using oil paints in my studio, sometimes painting from photographs I've taken on location, and often from the watercolor "sketches" I've done. No matter which medium I use — I tend to go inside myself while painting, and feel I've become one with the scenery. The time I spend painting is very enjoyable. My style of painting is traditional, and my work leans toward impressionism. I hope you enjoy my paintings as much as I enjoy the process of painting them.

Art Shows

Here are some highlights from art shows over the past few years:

Something Red 2008

• Kona RED: oil on canvas, 18 x 24, was in the "Something Red" 6th annual art exhibit in downtown Salem during the month of December. This painting received the Salem Merchants Award.
While in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, visiting my son Jesse in March 2008, I went to the Kona Brew Pub where he works, and sat under the red umbrellas. They inspired me to paint this oil painting, creating an interesting composition of shapes and patterns, and shades of red. ($900)

Mural at Sandwich Express

• Go to MURALS to view photos of the Sandwich Express mural while in progress• The finished mural may be viewed at Sandwich Express, 1253 23rd Street SE, Salem, Oregon. I was asked by the owner to paint a mural on the wall spanning the length of the entire dining area above the early 1900's model train tracks overhead. Using acrylic paints and interior wall paint, I used archive photo references for the buildings and my imagination and memory for the background landscape of historical Salem and surrounding areas. It's a fun mural designed as the backdrop for the model train that chugs along around the dining room, to the delight of old and young alike. Click on the Photo Gallery to view photos of the mural taken while it was in progress. The entire mural is over 150 feet long and 3 ft. high (450 sq. ft.).
